Scribble log...

These are just some drawings, with a bit of director's commentary, but nothing so moving i'd feel inclined to do an actual blog about it.

old old stuff: band member abuse 25 Apr 2006 13:37
Okay, this is really old and about as rough as they come. It was done as one of those matric-shirt drawings. It is so flawed that i won't even bother commenting on anything specific. Anyway, this was for Rian Botha, who at that stage was with me in a garage band that seldom escaped the garage (with good reason). He made the tactical error of inviting me to draw whatever my heart desired, which led to this liberal representation of a bassist skewering a drummer... which should let you guess our respective roles in the band fairly easily (although he did manage to fill every other concievable slot in the band as well along the way).

(for a little behind the scenes info: i met my girlfriend Lize through this fine gentleman and we're heading pretty close on 6 years now)

sadev: lemmings hung over 22 Mar 2006 08:02
This'd be a somewhat used wallpaper for the www.sadeveloper.net site. It was meant to be a post TechEd 2003 wallpaper. TechEd being the annual developer's conference/drinking marathon held at Sun City by Microsoft. Again, this was probably a thousand times better than the actual banner the site was using at the time. I think the body language of the two lemmings on the right is quite nice if i do say so myself.

sadev: lemming at desk 22 Mar 2006 07:55
This'd be an unused wallpaper for the www.sadeveloper.net site. Which is kind of ironic, since of all the pictures i've done for sadeveloper i like this one by far the best. There's actually a strange pattern where i hate the actual banners i've done for the site and the drawings i actually like never end up seeing the light of day. Anyway. The character is loosely based on the Psygnosis Lemmings games. That was the brainchild of the two site leads at the time, but i was happy to comply since the original Lemmings is probably my favourite game ever. (You may notice me leaning away from the hyperactive cross hatching... or you may not)

old character designs: smith + dutch 17 Mar 2006 08:00
Two very old character designs of mine. Smith and Dutch. This is from back when i still lived in PE... so i'm scratching for content. Like before, my lack of focus in creating reproducible, three dimensional characters is quite evident here. I had a fairly grand idea for these guys, actually. Which is fairly amazing since these were the days before i knew that such things as webcomics even existed. Who knows what i was planning to do with this project. That aside, these characters formed a bit of a landmark for me. This was basically my first real step in moving away from what i had previously considered to be cool looking characters, that being: long haired guys in trenchcoats wearing boots. Also, no guitars and no swords. Thinking about those days pains me.

sketch: el camino 16 Mar 2006 13:38
Yes, this is meant to be an El Camino. I think they're the coolest cars in the world, so i wish i'd gotten it a little closer, but anyway. I made the back a bit too short, so it ended up looking like some sort of generic retro sedan. I'm not really of this type of mildly technical drawing type stuff... proportion and angles and perspective really all just add up quickly - you go a little bit wrong here and there and the whole thing becomes unrecognisable. Anyway, practice helps, i suppose. I did this one sometime last year for www.jeanpant.com. At this very moment there's a slightly mangled version of the image in the site's banner.
